Sweet & Spicy Red Pepper Hummus

Hummus: a beautiful, beautiful food. So easy to make, so deliciously satisfying. In the past decade, it has it become a staple in the grocery aisle, but only in the past 3 years has in been offered in a crazy array of flavors.

Malcolm Gladwell would suggest that this is only embracing human variability (see his TED talk on this subject here), but I know it to be marketing genius. I am embarrassed to admit that I have allowed this marketing to work on me, and occasionally treat myself to some Americanized version of this middle-eastern staple. In my own kitchen, I deviate from the conventional and find new and tasty flavors to add to my concoction.

This recipe makes a slightly sweet hummus with a kick. It is perfect on a sandwich stacked with roasted veggies, or eaten straight from the spoon (I won't tell if you won't).

Sweet & Spicy Red Pepper Hummus
Ingredients
2 cups cooked chickpeas
1/2 cup tahini
1/3 cup grapeseed oil
1 clove garlic
2 roasted piquillo peppers (or 1/2 roasted red bell pepper)
Juice of 1 large lemon
1 teaspoon cumin
2 tablespoons chili sauce (Sambal or Sriracha)
1 teaspoon salt
Cilantro to garnish (optional)

Instructions

Place all ingredients in food processor until blended. If hummus is thick, add water for desired thickness, 1 tablespoon at a time. Taste hummus for salt & heat level, and adjust accordingly.

Serve in a shallow bowl and garnish with additional chili sauce and chopped fresh cilantro.

Enjoy!

  2. I would loooooooooove to get cocktails! I am in serious need of some girl time. We should do it soon when you don't have rehearsal. I am free almost all the time and cheap, strong drinks sound perfect. Let me know when you are free, or I guess I could just ask Walter. :)
